Bestselling author, Nalini Singh builds a brilliantly sensual and innovative fantasy series in Slave to Sensation. The world of the Psy and the changelings gives a whole new perspective to the supernatural.
Stay tuned til the end for a giveaway!
In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of “rehabilitation” – the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was…
Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy coexistence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his packmate. Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. He soon discovers that this ice-cold Psy is very capable of passion – and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities – or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation.

Slave to Sensation is an awesome book. The world that Nalini Singh has built for this series is addictive. The complete dichotomy between the Psy and the Changelings is paramount to how the narrative moves forward.
Firstly, there are the Psy. Decades prior to the start of the narrative, the Psy initiated Silence. A program to eliminate all emotions and prevent violence. This also allowed the Psy to focus on increasing the productivity of their race. The Psy are all connected through the Psy network and each of them have certain abilities.
Next you have the Changelings. This race, as you can possible guess, are able to change into a particular creature. They are pack lead and can change into a variety of creatures such as wolves, panthers and even deer. They are human in appearence, beast by nature.
Sascha Duncan is different to every other Psy, as far as she knows. She has built multiple shields to defend her difference from her family and the council. But she can only hide for so long. When put in charge of the Psy-Changling joint business venture, she doesn’t expect to be so entranced by her co-worker. Her character is very well developed throughout the narrative. She is complex and disaplays an inordinate amount of strength.
Opposite to Sascha is Lucas Hunter. A pack Alpha who came into power at a young age after suffering things that no child should have to. His sensuality is overpowering and is what eventually opens Sascha to the reality of her situation. The character development as a whole is very well done and written with the building of a world in mind.
One of the elements I was particularly surprised by was the sexual content. Don’t get me wrong, it was graphic and entirely of an adult nature. What surprised me was the way it wove so heavily into the narrative. Some books will include sexual content almost as an added extra that has no agenda where the plot is concerned. In Slave to Sensation the discovery of Sascha’s emotions is largely in part to her overwhelming desire. Furthermore, it emphasises the need for emotion over the void that the Psy feel. I think that Singh’s use of graphic content is unique from other books. She provides a legitimate method for exploring more culturally controversial topics.
Overall, I will be picking up the rest of the series. I’m particularly looking forward to how the world of the Psy moves forward after the events of Slave to Sensation.
