Today is the publication day of Secrets in Phoenix by Gabriella Lepore and to celebrate I caught up with Ben, from OfTomes Publishing, and Gabriella and asked them a few questions about their experience leading up to today!
What gave you the idea to start your own micro-publisher and how does it feel?
I have always been so interested in the world of publishing and have always enjoyed working closely with authors with various marketing and publicity roles. It hit me last year that I love being my own boss, so i combined that feeling with the want to own my own company. Publishing was always something I found interesting and wanted to learn more about so It made sense that I opened one for my own.
How does it feel to see the first book that you’ve produced in your hands?
It feels incredible. A dream. One of those things that is truly hard to put all feelings down into words. Sometimes I find myself holding it and looking over it with a massive smile on my face.
What have you learnt so far about the process?
I have learnt ALOT. I have decided to make some youtube videos in the future on the Oftomes youtube page explaining about processes and job roles and the ‘behind the scenes’ for publishing.
What advice would you give to aspiring authors and publishers?
Not being an author means I can not give much advice, except that if you love what you do it will really come across to a reader. But to aspiring publishers.. just follow your dream. Its all do-able and I believe if you have the love and interest for the world you can go far.
I know you and Ben have been friends for some time now. How does it feel to be the first author published by OfTomes Publishing?
It’s fantastic! Ben and I started out at the same time and we’ve been on this book journey together ever since. We’ve shared every step of our careers (the highs and the lows!) and it means so much to me that I can be a part of OfTomes and share this experience too. I’m honoured!
How has the experience of working with OfTomes Publishing differed to the publishing of your previous works?
OfTomes is Ben’s baby, he’s put his heart and soul into the company and his vision is shaped by his passion for books. The plans for the future are innovative and exciting, and I can’t wait to see them come to life.
What was your favourite part of writing Secrets in Phoenix?
I love writing about witches in different forms and it was fun to incorporate the idea of witchcraft from a scientific perspective. And, of course, I adored the characters!
Who inspires you to write?
Growing up I read all the time! I was particularly inspired by children’s author W. J. Corbett, who wrote with a very wry, ironic sense of humour.
Do you listen to music when you write? If so who do you listen to?
Yes! I usually have a playlist for each book 🙂 For Secrets in Phoenix, my most played song was Yuki’s Song by Deep Forest.
Thanks to Gabriella and Ben for taking part and happy publication day to you both!
