A couple of years ago I was advised to open a Wattpad account. What is Wattpad? I asked. A new super cool social media thing, was the answer. So I got myself some, because who would want to miss out on that! And then I spent the next year staring at it, occasionally poking it with a stick, wondering when it was going to do something. The triumvirate, or rule of three, has made its mark on historical fiction. Trilogies by Philippa Gregory, Robert Harris and Hilary Mantel (whose third Cromwell novel is eagerly awaited) have attracted an immense following. Yet there is a definite feeling that it has ‘had its day’, and certainly, publishers are reluctant to encourage the less well-known author to write a series of three.
